Making Shadow Worlds

Weekend 30 April & 1 May 2016 / £95 / CREATING
Shake up your practice, improve your skills and explore the possibilities of using shadow in performance and creative practice on this creative treat of a weekend!

Students will make installations from objects and materials provided and explore the effects of animating them with light upon a screen. You will experiment with the effects of moving objects and moving light sources.

The course will provide a safe environment to try new ideas, take creative risks and open up the possibilities of working with light and shadows under the encouraging watchful eye of course leader Isobel Smith.

Led by Isobel Smith.

Autumn Term starts soon at Brighton Puppetry School

Thinking of joining us this term?
Our courses are booking well, we’ll remove the paypal buttons when courses are full – just so you know!
Autumn term kicks off with MAKING PUPPETS FOR SOLO PERFORMANCE, 26 & 27th September – a weekend course in anticipation of our 8 week evening class to explore how to make a show with your solo creations. (We’re offering a 10% discount if you book both courses together).
We think solo puppetry is a fantastic way in to discovering the creative potential and many uses of puppetry. The puppets we will make on the Puppets for Solo Performance course are specially designed to be moved beautifully with just one pair of hands.
After designing the structure of the puppet, we’ll use quick papier-mâché techniques to model a head and hands, then make a cloaked body and add rods to control the puppet’s movement. Students will leave the course with a wonderfully expressive, strong and effective solo puppet and making techniques to transfer to future puppet projects.
We’re delighted by the support and enthusiasm for the launch of Brighton Puppetry School and hope to see lots of you at our launch party this Sunday 13th September.
It’s a good chance to ask us any questions you may have about our courses for this term and next year.
Please RSVP if you’d like to join us for cakes, makes, a toast and a song (this is just so we can make sure we have enough materials, cake and, of course, champagne!).
Very best wishes,
Darren, Beccy  & Is x

Spotlight on Solo Puppetry

Thinking about joining us for some of our first term?  We wanted to tell you a little bit more about our thinking.

DoggedPunched1

The centrepiece courses of our first term focus on making puppets and puppetry for the solo performer. Why start here? Well, solo puppetry is a main-stay for artists making new work: it’s portable and economical to tour and a great way to showcase your individual vision. As such, it’s a brilliant way to begin your journey into puppetry as well as being really useful for established artists looking to develop their own work.

But it’s not only for work in the theatre: making puppets that can be easily animated by you on your own is great for work in the classroom and therapeutic contexts as well as in storytelling and children’s workshops.

We think solo puppetry is a fantastic way in to discovering the creative potential and many uses of puppetry, so why not join us on September 26th / 27th to explore ways to make puppets that you can bring to life on your own, or on Tuesday evenings from October 6th for an 8 week course discovering ways to bring your solo creations to life. There’s even a 10% discount if you book both courses together!

And don’t forget our launch part’s on September 13th – please RSVP if you’d like to join us for cakes, makes, a toast and a song (this is just so we can make sure we have enough materials, cake and, of course, champagne!).  It’s also a chance to ask us any questions you may have about this or any other of our courses for this term and next year.
Very best wishes,
Darren, Beccy  & Is x
