‘Its combination of practical work, feedback and discussion makes it unique and valuable’
Discover the ways you can imagine, shape and develop stories that will entrance and inspire children at the theatre. Bring a show you’ve been working on, or start something brand new.
In this supportive 6-week course, we will use practical exercises and discussion to explore the special and unique form that is children’s theatre from a writer’s point of view. We will look at classic story structures and shaping; working with interaction; creating exciting, engaging characters; working with atmosphere, music and song; non-literary languages (including, of course, puppetry); surprises and innovation.
The course is led by Beccy Smith who as a dramaturg and writer has developed new children’s shows for Re:Play Theatre, Theatre Lark, Laura Lindow and the Empty Space (shortlisted for a Journal Culture Award); Unpacked, Monkeyshine and with her own company TouchedTheatre. Her children’s shows have toured nationally and internationally, sold out at Edinburgh Fringe and played prestigious chidlren’s festivals including Spark (Leicester) and Barboro (Galway) and opened Belfast’s Children’s Festival.
