‘A REALLY VALUABLE COURSE’
‘ALL OF IT WAS USEFUL! IT WAS FAB.’
This course is an introduction to working with puppets in a therapeutic environment, with particular focus on work in mental health.
A mixture of practical exercises and discussion, we will cover the mechanics of how puppets work for therapy, explore storytelling as a therapeutic process, and model simple puppet designs alongside the basics of puppet technique to bring them to life.
We will also look at effective techniques for measuring outcomes in this work, and using puppets for qualitative evaluation.
We’ll briefly touch on ways this work can also be done, like this course, remotely.
You will leave ready to use puppetry more dynamically in your therapeutic projects, confident about how puppetry can complement therapeutic activity and full of fresh ideas ready to put into practice.
This course is for playworkers, art therapists, social workers or artists wishing to expand their practice.
The course will be led by Darren East. He runs TouchedTheatre, through which he has been leading therapeutic puppetry and film workshops for more than five years. Touched has a long term partnership with Child and Adolescent Mental Health services in Brighton and Hove, running regular workshops for young people in their care. Their work with these groups was shortlisted for the national Children and Young People Now! Awards in the Culture category. Touched have also run projects for MIND and Darren has led the puppetry course for Sussex Recovery College for adults with personal experience of mental health challenges.
