Tuesdays 4 May – 15 June (No class 1 June) / Six evenings on Zoom 7-9pm UK time / £150 / PERFORMING
A new way of introducing and exercising the key skills of puppetry.
Using reference videos of some expert puppetry, you’ll be set a series of exercises and explorations you can do at home, using household objects, things you can find or collect, and some simple puppet makes with everyday equipment.
We will explore essentials like breath, impulse, focus, and animation to give you a solid foundation for your puppetry skills, with exercises that you can apply to a whole range of puppetry types. We’ll also look specifically at some more particular techniques like shadow puppetry.
No experience necessary – the course will introduce ways of bringing puppets and objects to life, to start to develop meaningful manipulation that is expressive and emotionally truthful. But it’s also a great refresher course if you’re a more experienced puppeteer who is feeling a little rusty, or want to come and play.
Suitable for anyone working with, or interested in working with puppets – actors who want to add skills; playworkers, teachers, therapists and anyone interested in using puppets in other contexts; beginners who are intrigued by the possibilities of puppetry; or more experienced performers looking for a refresher on the key skills.
The course will be led by Darren East.
