NEW COURSES: WRITING FOR CHILDREN’S THEATRE

In our continuing series delving deeper into the 2016/17 programme, this week we’re focusing on the term’s first all-round creating course, which is Writing for Children’s Theatre (6 x Sunday afternoons, October 2nd – November 13th).

Are you interested in creating brilliant new work for children but wondering where to start?  This welcoming Sunday afternoon programme will support you to explore the exciting art of crafting beautiful and engaging children’s theatre.

Discover the ways you can imagine, shape and develop stories that will entrance and inspire children with performance and storytelling.  Bring a show you’ve been working on / dreaming about, or start something brand new.

The classes will incorporate sharing inspiring shows on page and film alongside investigating core principles of writing for children’s theatre, exploring practical exercises to unlock creativity and sharing and discussing our own work.

The group is carefully facilitated by experienced dramaturg and writer Beccy Smith.  Plays she has created for children have toured England and Ireland, opened a number of children’s theatre festivals including Barboro and Belfast, and delighted thousands of young audiences around the UK.

This course will explore puppetry and so much more… and is part of our commitment to explore the ways puppetry works within wider artistic landscapes.

New Courses: Puppets for the Small Stage

Each week over the summer, we’re going to throw a spotlight on one of the brilliant puppetry courses we have coming up this autumn.

Today: PUPPETS FOR THE SMALL STAGE (8 x Thursday Evenings 15 Sept – 3 Nov)

The perfect making course to kick start your puppetry ambitions, explore making for a show you have have in mind or just learn new skills.
Over eight evenings you learn how to make a performance-ready mid-sized puppet to your own design.

Lead by Isobel Smith you will carve a head from foam and cover it with extra strong paper mache. Using styrofoam, wood, cardboard, leather, glue and paint you will draw, sculpt, saw, stick and stitch your puppet into being.

You will leave the course with puppet making techniques, contacts and inspiration to transfer to your future puppet projects. Looking forward to working with you.

Puppets at Brighton festival

There are a handful of brilliant and inspiring puppetry shows visiting Brighton this month and we at BPS wanted to pass on a few sure-fire recommendations from artists whose work we think you’ll love.

Fresh from a successful run in Iceland, Old Saw bring their lyrical The Meadow, which features simply beautiful puppetry and music on an elegaic theme, to the Warren 20th-22nd May and 30 May-1 June.  Though it says ‘for children’, this one will appeal to all.
On 23rd, 25th, 27th May, lovely lo-fi performance art piece, Buttons tells a personal travelogue with charming and inventive use of an OHP.

Though we haven’t seen Hysterical , this combination of new writing, performance poetry, clown and puppetry looks intriguing if you’re into new theatre.

Bears get a good outing in Brighton’s puppetry scene this month.  For kids, BPS alumni Go Kid Music bring their new musical Just Right to The Old Market. Their Three Little Pigs last year was loads of fun with characterful puppets doing fabulous songs.

And at the Marlborough, our old Punched muckers Foulplay Productions bring the full version of a show they first premiered with us in October 2014 – The Bear Space. Expect a heady script,  fantastically crafted puppets, and lots of fun and games (this one will sell out we’re sure).
Throughout the month, Bom-banimals combines puppetry and songwriting with promenade and dinner in the inimitable Bom-banes cafe.
Brighton Festival are also bringing some puppetry to the city this month, in the form of Chilean company White Silence’s powerful The Silence of the Coal.  There are still tickets left for what looks like it’ll be an affecting and top quality visual performance.
This is the time of year when we feel most lucky to be in the heart of Brighton and these are just the shows that we know will be good – let us know if you think we’ve missed any puppetry treats!
